WATCH Matt Damon Say He Wishes America Had Australian-Style Gun Ban

Gun control remains an intensely-debated topic in the United States on the heels of several recent mass shootings, including the worst one in our history, but in other parts of the world, people are scratching their heads. Jason Bourne star Matt Damon, for example, probably didn’t raise many eyebrows in Australia when he lamented that he wished our country could handle gun control the way Australia did, but his remarks are causing a major freakout in this hemisphere.

During promotional round-robin interviews for the film, Damon told media reporter Sarah Thomas that he thought Australia had gotten it right, and that Americans are “too emotional” about guns to talk “sensibly” about them:

You guys did it here in one fell swoop, and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t. People get so emotional that even when you make a suggestion about not selling AK47s to people on terror watch lists, that’s a non-starter. I don’t know what needs to happen. Obviously mass shootings aren’t going to do it.

As if to prove his point, Damon’s comments were immediately plastered all over the conservative blogosphere as a call for “confiscation,” when the only policy he actually proposed was the bipartisan measure to keep people on the terror watch list from buying guns.
